India Kicks Off FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 with a Strong Win Against Wales
Amstelveen: India started their journey in the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 with an impressive 3-1 victory over Wales during their first Pool D match at the Wagener Stadium on Saturday.
The match saw Sanjay and team captain Harmanpreet Singh put India in a commanding position early on. Sanjay got the scoring going in the eighth minute with a penalty corner goal, and just three minutes later, Harmanpreet added another goal, also from a penalty corner, to give India a 2-0 lead.
After halftime, India maintained their dominant performance. Harmanpreet netted his second goal of the match in the 43rd minute, once again converting a penalty corner and extending India’s lead to 3-0.
Wales managed to score in the 55th minute, with Sam Welsh finding the net after a scramble in the circle. However, India’s defense stood strong in the final moments of the game, securing the victory and all three points.
With this win, India tops Pool D as they prepare for their next match against England on August 17. In their pool, India is alongside England, Wales, and their long-time rivals, Pakistan. It’s been 50 years since India won the World Cup, a triumph that came in 1975 when they defeated Pakistan 2-1 in the final. After finishing ninth in the 2023 World Cup held in Bhubaneswar, India is eager to capitalize on their recent successes, including two Olympic bronze medals and a win in the Asia Cup.
Before the opening game, Harmanpreet Singh expressed the team’s commitment to ending India’s 51-year wait for the FIH Hockey World Cup title. He highlighted the importance of the tournament for the team, especially with several experienced players on board.
“The World Cup is very significant for all of us. After this World Cup, you never know what the future holds. This is a wonderful opportunity for our team, especially with our senior players,” Harmanpreet stated.
As India moves forward in the tournament, the excitement continues to build, with hopes high for a successful campaign.
