Pakistan’s President Emphasizes Unique Identity in Independence Day Address
In a recent speech, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari highlighted the differing perspectives of Pakistanis and Indians. He made the point during an Independence Day event on August 14, asserting that Hindus living in Pakistan are content and enjoy the freedom to practice their faith.
Zardari noted, “Indians believe in the idea of Akhand Bharat, which is a vision of a unified India. However, we, as Muslims in Pakistan, embrace a mindset of tolerance. Our Hindu community, which makes up about 4% of the population, feels quite at home here. They would prefer to stay in Pakistan than move to India,” he said.
The President’s remarks came amid discussions on the ongoing relationship between Pakistan and India, as well as the country’s current geopolitical landscape. Pakistan celebrates its Independence Day a day before India, commemorating its establishment during the Partition of British India.
Leadership Calls for Unity and Progress
As Pakistan celebrated its 80th Independence Day, the nation’s top leaders, both civil and military, called for unity and an emphasis on peace and economic growth. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his address, expressed a desire for peaceful relations but clarified that this should not be mistaken for weakness.
“We want harmony, not conflict. However, our commitment to peace should not be viewed as a sign of vulnerability,” he stated. Sharif also referenced a recent conflict with India, underlining that Pakistan will safeguard its national interests, especially concerning water resources. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s role as a stabilizing force in the region and the world.
Concerns Over Water Resources and Regional Security
Sharif pointed out issues related to the Indus Waters Treaty and the ongoing Kashmir conflict. He accused India of illegally suspending the treaty and firmly declared that Pakistan views every drop of its water as a critical issue. This suspension came after tensions escalated from a terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in civilian casualties.
The Prime Minister also called on Afghanistan to prevent its territory from being used for any activities that threaten Pakistan’s security. He mentioned a trilateral defense agreement with Saudi Arabia and Turkey, stressing Pakistan’s expanding role in regional cooperation.
Acknowledgments and Military Strength
In his Independence Day message, Zardari praised the Pakistan military, crediting it for decisively responding to India during the previous confrontation. He expressed gratitude for the leadership of Field Marshal Asim Munir in these tense times.
In a note of thanks, Sharif acknowledged former U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts in facilitating a ceasefire between the two nations last year, although India has consistently rejected any claims of third-party mediation.
These statements reflect Pakistan’s complex relationship with India, underscoring a mix of national pride, calls for unity, and the ongoing challenges both countries face together.
