Three individuals of Telugu descent residing in Missouri, USA, have been found guilty of charges related to forced labor and human trafficking involving a young student from Andhra Pradesh. Venkatesh Sattaru, the main suspect, received a prison sentence of 50 months, while his associates, Nikhil Penmatsa and Sravan Penumetcha, were sentenced to 37 months and 30 months, respectively.
The troubling events date back to 2022, when the trio forced a 20-year-old student into a life of abuse and servitude. The incident came to the attention of the authorities in late 2023 after a vigilant citizen observed suspicious activities and alerted the local police.
Investigators revealed that the victim, who is actually Sattaru’s cousin, had come to the United States to pursue his studies. Instead, he found himself trapped in a series of homes, confined in basements for nearly seven months where he was compelled to perform various household tasks.
During this time, his captors confiscated his immigration documents, limited his food intake, denied him proper restroom access, and subjected him to severe sleep deprivation. The physical abuse he endured resulted in significant injuries and drastic weight loss.
The court has mandated that all three men serve their sentences and face additional legal repercussions. The verdict has sent shockwaves through the Telugu Non-Resident Indian (NRI) community and the broader Indian diaspora in the United States, as the case had gained widespread attention on social media and news platforms when it first emerged.
