New Zealand’s cricket team has decided to divide their squad for the upcoming five-match ODI series against India, as they look to balance their Test preparations and explore different player options ahead of the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. This move was shared by head coach Rob Walter.
The ODI series is set to kick off on November 4, with many players specializing in Test cricket expected to leave after the first three matches. This is to ensure they are well-prepared for the two-Test series against India, which will commence on November 19 at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.
Among the players, only six have been selected to play all five ODIs: captain Mitchell Santner, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Will Young, and Blair Tickner. Other players will either exit after the third ODI or join the squad for the last two matches.
“Each Test match holds significant importance for us in terms of championship points, which is a reason we’re allowing some squad members to leave early for better preparation ahead of the first Test,” Walter mentioned.
The adjustments will also provide New Zealand the opportunity to evaluate their team depth against India, as seven new players will be brought in for the final two ODIs.
FOCUS ON WORLD CUP PREPARATIONS
With less than a year to go until the 2027 ODI World Cup, to be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, New Zealand views this series as a valuable test of their team combinations and player assessments.
“This series is huge for us, playing in front of our home fans against a strong Indian team,” said Walter. He emphasized the importance of these matches as preparation for the World Cup.
The last two matches will serve as a chance for New Zealand to evaluate players outside of their main group. “Bringing in seven players for the later ODIs lets us explore our depth and see how these players perform against a world-class team,” he added.
Players like Devon Conway, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, and Nathan Smith will kick off the series in the first three ODIs before departing for Test preparation. Meanwhile, Finn Allen, Kristian Clarke, Matt Fisher, Lockie Ferguson, Mitch Hay, Nick Kelly, and Tim Seifert will join for the last two matches.
FINN ALLEN’S NEW ROLE
One of the highlights of the squad selection is Finn Allen’s return. The team is keen to see how this dynamic player can influence the middle order in the ODI format, as he generally opens in T20 matches.
Walter explained, “We have a different role planned for Finn in the middle order, aiming to see how he can challenge spinners and fifth or sixth bowlers during mid-innings.”
This new strategy has been considered for some time, not simply in response to recent high-scoring match trends. Walter noted the importance of taking risks in the middle stages of the game, especially when conditions are favorable.
Allen’s adaptation to this new role is an ongoing discussion and the series against India will provide an ideal platform to evaluate his performance.
KEY RETURNING PLAYERS
Allen, along with Lockie Ferguson and Tim Seifert, will return for the final two ODIs. While Allen and Ferguson last played ODI matches in 2023, Seifert is making a comeback after about 18 months out of the ODI format.
Walter expressed optimism about having these skilled players back in the mix, stating, “We are fortunate to have a deep squad with 21 players involved in this series, and bringing back players like Lockie, Finn, and Tim adds to our options.”
Rachin Ravindra is also set to rejoin the team after recovering from a shoulder injury. New Zealand aims to build on their success from earlier this year when they secured a 2-1 ODI series victory in India, which marked their first ODI series win on Indian soil.
MANAGING FAST BOWLERS
As they prepare for a packed international schedule, including a series against Australia, New Zealand is managing their fast bowlers carefully.
Will O’Rourke is recovering from a lower-back injury, and although a calf issue delayed his return, Walter assured that it is not a major concern. “We are taking a cautious approach to ensure he’s ready for Test cricket,” he said.
Ben Sears is also on the mend following ankle surgery and is anticipated to start running soon, while O’Rourke, Sears, and Zak Foulkes, who is recovering from a hip flexor injury, will miss the India ODI series.
TEST SQUAD ANNOUNCEMENT TIMELINE
Before the ODI matches, New Zealand will face India in a five-match T20I series. Following that, the Test series will begin, with the first match set to take place in Wellington from November 19 to 23, and the second in Christchurch from November 27 to December 1.
The selectors are expected to announce the Test squad in early November. This split in the ODI squad allows New Zealand to focus on their Test preparations while also giving players a chance to prove themselves for future selections, particularly for the 2027 World Cup.
