Michael Terrell Leaves Google After 19 Years, Paving the Way for Clean Energy
Michael Terrell, who has been leading Google’s Advanced Energy efforts, is set to leave the company after nearly two decades of dedicated service. His departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Google’s journey towards renewable and nuclear energy.
In a heartfelt post on LinkedIn, Terrell shared the news, stating, “After 19 incredible years, my journey at Google is coming to a close.” When he joined the company in 2007, clean energy was just beginning to gain traction within the tech giant.
Reflecting on his early days at Google, Terrell noted that the idea of transitioning to cleaner energy sources seemed far-off. “When I started, our initial efforts in renewable energy, electric vehicles, and smart grids were more like small, charitable projects,” he wrote.
However, the landscape has changed dramatically over the years. Today, these energy solutions have not only expanded but also become essential parts of Google’s operations worldwide.
This transformation mirrors Google’s overall energy strategy, especially as the company’s energy demands have increased significantly. According to TechCrunch, Google’s data centers consumed 30.8 million megawatt-hours of electricity in 2024, nearly double the amount from just four years prior.
As Michael Terrell steps away, his legacy in the clean energy sector will continue to influence Google and the broader industry for years to come.
