Kim Kardashian is sharing details about a recent health issue that has impacted her personally. In a new trailer for the reality series “The Kardashians,” the 45-year-old star announced that she has been diagnosed with esophagitis, a condition marked by inflammation of the esophagus.
This news is particularly poignant for Kim, as her father, Robert Kardashian Sr., passed away from esophageal cancer in 2003 at the age of 59. During the episode, Kim is shown in a hospital setting where someone asks about her father’s condition, prompting an emotional response from her mother, Kris Jenner, who says, “I can’t. It makes me want to cry.”
Health experts have clarified that esophagitis and esophageal cancer are not the same, although there are connections between them. Esophagitis is often caused by factors like acid reflux, certain medications, infections, or allergies, according to medical sources.
Kim’s diagnosis led to a discussion about health risks, especially given her family’s history. While esophagitis does not directly cause cancer, chronic inflammation can sometimes develop into Barrett’s esophagus, a pre-cancerous condition linked to a higher risk of certain types of esophageal cancer, particularly for those suffering from long-term acid reflux (known as GERD).
It is known that about 5% to 15% of individuals with GERD may develop Barrett’s esophagus, but most of these cases do not progress to esophageal cancer.
For those dealing with esophagitis, medical professionals recommend several steps for symptom management. These include taking prescribed medications for acid reduction if GERD is a factor, avoiding foods and drinks that may worsen reflux such as alcohol and caffeine, waiting a few hours after eating before lying down, maintaining a healthy weight, and consulting a gastroenterologist if symptoms persist.
In a previous health scare, Kim revealed in 2025 that doctors found a small, unruptured brain aneurysm during an MRI scan. She noted that it had been there for years and was discovered during routine checks.
Kim’s openness about her health challenges highlights the importance of awareness and proactive management of health issues, especially for those with a family history of related conditions.
