India Wins Bronze in Sepak Takraw at King’s Cup

On August 7, India clinched a bronze medal in the men’s quadrant event at the King’s Cup Sepak Takraw Championship held in Thailand. This achievement highlights India’s growing presence in a sport that has long been dominated by Southeast Asian countries, especially with the 2026 Asian Games approaching.

After reaching the semi-finals, the Indian team faced the host nation, Thailand. In an exciting match that went to three sets, India put up a good fight but ultimately lost with scores of 15-9, 9-15, 9-15. Despite the loss, the team’s performance secured them a place on the podium.

The team’s celebrations were captured in a video that quickly gained popularity on social media, showcasing the growing interest in sepak takraw in India.

Understanding Sepak Takraw

Sepak takraw is a dynamic team sport that blends elements from volleyball, football, and martial arts. Players use their feet, heads, and knees (but not their hands) to keep a ball airborne and send it over a net. The game is played on a court similar to a badminton court, where teams strive to land the ball on their rival’s side while protecting their own.

In the regu format, each team has three players. The quadrant event, on the other hand, features four players for each side.

The King’s Cup

The King’s Cup Sepak Takraw Championship is one of the sport’s most esteemed tournaments. Established in 1985 and dedicated to the King of Thailand, it draws top national teams from around the world. The inaugural event took place in Bangkok, with Malaysia claiming the first title. Since then, Thailand has been the powerhouse of the competition.

Each team competes in three regu matches, and to win, they must secure victories in at least two out of the three.

Looking Ahead to the Asian Games

India’s bronze medal is a great addition to the country’s recent achievements in sepak takraw. Earlier this year, India won the men’s quadrant gold at the Asia Sepaktakraw Championship in Japan, defeating Japan after a tightly contested final. The team also topped their group, beating strong teams like Malaysia and South Korea.

India is rapidly emerging as a serious contender in this sport, having won its first men’s regu gold medal at the International Sepaktakraw Federation World Cup in March 2025. The bronze from the King’s Cup serves as positive momentum for the Indian team as they prepare for the Asian Games in 2026, where they will be among the favorites to win medals.

Conclusion

As India continues to make strides in sepak takraw, the team’s strong performance at the King’s Cup bodes well for their future endeavors in the upcoming Asian Games. Fans are excitedly watching this sport grow in popularity across the nation.
