Ajinkya Rahane Backs Rohit Sharma for 2027 World Cup
Former Indian cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to give clarity to Rohit Sharma regarding his future in One Day Internationals (ODIs), emphasizing that the seasoned opener should be included in India’s plans for the 2027 World Cup. Rahane believes the focus should be on Rohit’s long-standing contributions rather than ongoing debates about his place in the team.
In a recent interview, Rahane stated, “It’s crucial that Rohit Sharma knows he will be playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup. His performance over the years has been remarkable, and such experience is vital for a successful World Cup campaign.”
The topic of Rohit’s future in ODIs has often surfaced, especially after his impressive innings at Lord’s. Rahane pointed out that selectors should not assess a player’s worth based on one or two series. “You can’t analyze a player of Rohit’s caliber like that. He’s a major player,” he added.
Rohit has had his share of ups and downs but proved his capabilities with a brilliant 138 runs against England, dispelling some doubts about his form. Although earlier reports hinted that the series against England might be his last, his performance highlighted the difference between temporary dips and his overall value to the team. Rohit is set to play in the upcoming ODI series against Australia beginning on October 19.

Rahane also expressed strong support for Virat Kohli, encouraging him to play freely as he works towards the 2027 World Cup. He noted that it’s essential for senior players to feel backed by the captain and management. “Let them play until the World Cup; they are experienced and have shown their quality over the years,” said Rahane.
The former batter emphasized that performance can fluctuate, and basing judgments on a short series can be misleading. “Cricket is about rhythm. If Kohli aims to be part of the 2027 World Cup, he should definitely be included,” he added.
