Israel Receives New Dolphin-Class Submarine from Germany

Israel has officially received its latest and most sophisticated submarine from Germany, enhancing its naval capabilities amid rising regional tensions. The submarine, named INS Drakon, is expected to play a key role in Israel’s underwater missions.

Originally scheduled for delivery in 2025, the submarine was handed over to the Israeli Navy in a ceremony in Kiel, Germany. The INS Drakon belongs to the Dolphin AIP class and includes advanced systems designed to enhance the operational range of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Built by ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, this submarine is viewed as a crucial asset for the Israeli Navy, providing an essential layer of deterrence against potential threats, particularly from Iran, as noted by defense analysts.

Dr. Ehud Eilam, an Israeli national security expert, emphasized the importance of maintaining a presence at sea. He mentioned that Israel may need to have submarines on standby if confronted with an unexpected attack, highlighting the necessity of having submarines operational at all times.

The INS Drakon marks the sixth Dolphin-class submarine in Israel’s fleet and the third of the modified Dolphin II class. Its handover took place at the shipyard in late July.

This submarine measures over 70 meters in length and displaces more than 2,000 tons, making it the largest submarine built in Germany since World War II, with an estimated cost of around $634 million.

According to local media, Israel’s Dolphin-class submarines are vital for the nation’s defense strategy, offering significant second-strike capabilities. TKMS CEO Oliver Burkhard stated that the handover of the submarine aligns with Israel’s broader military goals.

With its arrival, military experts like Dr. Eilam see the INS Drakon enhancing Israel’s military reach and capabilities, especially in complex scenarios involving enemies like Iran. The submarine is designed to strike targets from afar, potentially avoiding risky passages that could expose it to enemy action.

The name “Drakon” (Dragon) was chosen to symbolize strength and resolve, and it honors the legacy of the submarine INS Dakar and its crew.

The Israeli Navy, along with other defense agencies, has been contacted for further comments regarding this significant addition to Israel’s naval fleet.
