Jeff Bezos Downplays Amazon’s Growth

Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, recently reflected on the company’s monumental success after it claimed the top spot on Fortune’s Global 500 list, making it the largest company in the world by revenue. Speaking from his makeshift desk in Washington, D.C., which he originally crafted in his Bellevue garage back in 1995, Bezos emphasized that being big was never the goal. He stated, “I don’t want us to take pride in being big,” and instead, he believes the focus should be on serving customers well, which naturally leads to growth.

With Amazon now valued around $2.6 trillion, Bezos anticipated this outcome, suggesting he had calculated the odds beforehand. The company has surpassed Walmart, which held the number one position for over a decade.

Amazon’s Remarkable Scale

The sheer size of Amazon is impressive. Reports indicate that the company delivers as many packages as the U.S. Postal Service. Its cloud service, AWS, supports about a third of the internet, and its Prime membership has grown to 200 million subscribers. Throughout his discussion, Bezos repeatedly mentioned “customer obsession,” highlighting that he believes many companies claim to focus on customers while really focusing on their competitors.

Major Investments in AI

Looking ahead, Amazon is making significant financial commitments, with capital expenditures hitting $131 billion in 2025 and projected to reach $200 billion in 2026. Much of this investment will go toward AWS and generative AI. Bezos considers their chip business, which will include the upcoming Trainium4, to be a key component of Amazon’s future success, alongside Marketplace, Prime, and AWS. Additionally, Amazon will invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic, which plans to purchase over $100 billion in cloud services from Amazon.

Evidence suggests that these investments are paying off. AWS’s AI revenue has reportedly reached an annual run rate of over $15 billion, a significant increase compared to what AWS generated in its early days.

Challenges Ahead

However, not all news is positive for Amazon. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and 17 states filed a lawsuit against the company in 2023, alleging anticompetitive practices, with a trial expected by 2027. Moreover, Amazon has made cuts to nearly 30,000 corporate positions over the past year. Bezos warned that Amazon’s greatest risk lies in losing its focus on customers. If the company shifts its attention toward short-term profits instead, it could jeopardize its innovative spirit and long-term success.
