Key Points from Uber’s Recent Quarter

  1. Strong Second Quarter Performance: Uber Technologies saw impressive growth in the second quarter, with gross bookings climbing 22% from the previous year to exceed $58 billion. Additionally, non-GAAP earnings per share rose by 35%. This marked the company’s fourth straight quarter of over 20% growth.

  2. Investment in Autonomous Vehicles: Uber is focusing heavily on developing its autonomous vehicle technology, currently operating in seven cities and aiming for 15 by the end of the year. The company plans to invest around $10 billion in this sector and is looking to incorporate up to 120,000 autonomous vehicles.

  3. Expansion in Delivery Services: The acquisition of Delivery Hero could potentially let Uber almost double its market presence, adding both mobility and delivery services. However, competition in Brazil has led to lower mobility revenue margins and a shift in their focus on managing costs.

Uber’s Financial Highlights

Uber reported that its gross bookings exceeded expectations in the second quarter, leading to both strong earnings growth and free cash flow surpassing $10 billion for the first time. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized that these results will allow Uber to continue investing in key areas like autonomous driving, expanding its delivery network, and improving product offerings.

Advancements in Autonomous Vehicle Services

Uber aims to become a leader in the autonomous vehicle market. The company is currently active in seven cities, with plans for expansion. Future launches in partnership with companies like Nuro and Lucid are planned for areas such as the San Francisco Bay and London. Khosrowshahi noted that Uber’s autonomous vehicle partners are currently achieving solid trip utilization.

Uber also has plans for a significant investment in the autonomous vehicle sector, amounting to roughly $10 billion. This will include partnerships with various tech and vehicle manufacturers. The company expects to announce details about the financial impacts of these investments as they progress.

Growth in U.S. Mobility

Uber’s mobility services have gained momentum in the U.S., driven by insurance savings and new product innovations. In less populated areas, Uber sees a substantial growth opportunity, as fewer than 10% of potential users have utilized the service in the past year.

Facing Competition in Brazil

Uber has faced challenges in Brazil as competition for two-wheeler drivers has intensified. The company has adapted its strategies by focusing incentives on driver supply to maintain its market position.

Future Plans and Acquisitions

Uber’s acquisition of Delivery Hero, expected to close in the latter half of 2027, will integrate into its global technology platform. This move aims to create efficiencies through shared technology and services.

Moreover, Uber spent about $3.5 billion on stock buybacks in the first half of 2026 but is shifting its focus toward acquisitions. The company had initially targeted maintaining 50% of its free cash flow for buybacks, but the needs of the business are now prompting a revised strategy.

It has expanded beyond ride-hailing to include delivery services and freight logistics, completing its initial public offering in 2019.
