Russia Explores New Rail Route to Indian Ocean
Russia is planning an ambitious railway project that could connect it to the Indian Ocean, potentially reaching India. This initiative comes as Moscow looks for alternative trade routes due to increasing risks around key maritime chokepoints, like the Bosphorus and the Strait of Hormuz.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin emphasized the importance of studying the feasibility of this rail link. He suggested that the route might go through Turkmenistan, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan before arriving at the Indian Ocean. In his words, “A rail link to the Indian Ocean should also be explored,” highlighting the need for alternatives given the current challenges.
The Need for Alternative Routes
This proposal emerges as maritime tensions rise in the Strait of Hormuz. Recent armed conflicts involving the US, Israel, and Iran have increased disruptions in this vital shipping lane. For example, joint military strikes were conducted against Iran on February 28, targeting major cities like Tehran. In retaliation, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched missile and drone attacks on US military bases and Israeli positions across several countries.
In response to these provocations, Iran also declared a maritime blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, specifically against vessels linked to the US and its allies. This area is crucial for global trade, responsible for around 25% of the world’s oil and nearly 20% of liquefied natural gas shipments.
Given these tensions, Russia’s proposed railway could serve as a secure overland route for cargo to reach the Indian Ocean and potentially India. Khusnullin mentioned that any route that ensures connectivity to India would be viewed as viable.
Investment in Domestic Construction
In a related discussion, Khusnullin addressed the need for increased investment in Russia’s construction sector. He indicated that the industry is well-positioned to take on an additional one trillion rubles each year. He stated that with consistent funding over the next five years, the construction capacity could expand significantly.
This proactive approach highlights Russia’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and economic resilience amidst global challenges.
