Mathematician Jacob Tsimerman Begins New Journey at OpenAI
Jacob Tsimerman, a professor at the University of Toronto and recent Fields Medal recipient, announced his new role at OpenAI during a press conference after the awards ceremony in July. Tsimerman emphasized that this move does not mean he is stepping away from mathematics. Instead, he views his new position as a way to apply mathematical principles to address significant scientific challenges in artificial intelligence (AI).
He remarked, “In a few years, AI systems will be incredibly proficient at mathematics,” adding that the social implications of this advancement raise complex questions that society must confront.
Tsimerman plans to utilize mathematical verification techniques to better understand AI’s decision-making processes and ensure that as these systems evolve, they do so safely. He shared with the Toronto Star that improvements in AI development tools have allowed him to quickly engage in AI safety research, something that felt impossible just a year ago.
He sees his transition to OpenAI as an opportunity to deepen his expertise in machine learning while collaborating with like-minded researchers tackling common challenges. “The biggest gap in my background has been in machine learning, so joining a lab at this time seemed logical,” he explained.
While tech companies like OpenAI can provide salaries that universities can’t compete with, Tsimerman insisted that monetary factors did not drive his decision. “What’s more important to me is how I can position myself for future contributions,” he stated.
On July 23, during the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia, Tsimerman, alongside three other mathematicians, received the Fields Medal—a prestigious accolade often compared to the Nobel Prize in mathematics. He made history by becoming the first scholar from a Canadian institution—and the second Canadian ever—to achieve this honor, largely for his role in proving the long-standing André-Oort conjecture in arithmetic geometry.
His choice to join OpenAI surprised many in the mathematics community, given his previous warnings about the dangers of advanced AI. Previously, Tsimerman expressed skepticism about AI’s ability to replicate human intuition and creativity. However, after experimenting with ChatGPT in 2022, he changed his perspective, realizing the rapid advancements in AI technology.
Last year, he co-authored a paper that discussed alarming scenarios where AI could pose existential risks to humanity—illustrating concerns that machines might outsmart humans completely.
Tsimerman also began focusing on AI engagement in his academic work, ceasing to mentor graduate students who did not incorporate AI into their studies. He adjusted his research focus away from number theory and complex algebraic geometry as he grappled with the future of mathematics in light of rapid AI advancements. Remarkably, recent AI models have begun solving mathematical problems that have stumped mathematicians for decades, which further fueled his concerns.
As he wraps up his last doctoral students, Tsimerman feels it’s the right time for a new chapter. Though uncertain about his length of stay at OpenAI or his return to academia, he noted, “There aren’t many certainties in my life right now.”
Despite this significant career shift, Tsimerman affirmed that mathematics will always play a vital role in his life. “I have plenty to keep me busy, and math is definitely one of those things,” he concluded.
