Cyclospora Outbreak Spreads Across 41 States

In a concerning development, health officials have reported a significant increase in cyclosporiasis cases across 41 states, with over 4,000 infections associated with contaminated produce. Dr. Marc Siegel highlighted the urgency of the situation, emphasizing that the outbreak is not yet fully under control, even with efforts from the FDA to trace its source.

Tragically, two individuals from Michigan have died as a result of this outbreak, marking a rare fatal outcome linked to this intestinal infection, according to health authorities. So far, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) has confirmed 11,234 reported cases, with 193 individuals hospitalized.

Officials noted that the two deceased had serious underlying health issues that may have worsened due to cyclosporiasis and dehydration. Additional details regarding these cases will be withheld for privacy reasons.

The source of this outbreak is under investigation, and officials suggest that lettuce or salad greens may be to blame. However, they are keeping other food items in mind, and no specific type of produce or supplier has been definitively identified.

As the investigation continues, MDHHS is collaborating with local health departments and other partners to gather more information. Updates will follow as they become available.

Cyclosporiasis, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, leads to symptoms such as severe diarrhea, abdominal cramping, nausea, and fatigue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that if not treated, symptoms can last for weeks or even months.

Though cyclosporiasis is usually not life-threatening, the recent deaths underscore the importance of being vigilant, especially for those with compromised health. Health officials strongly recommend practicing caution when consuming produce and staying informed about food safety guidelines.
