New Research Suggests Eating Less Protein May Boost Longevity for Sedentary Adults
A recent scientific review indicates that for adults who lead a sedentary lifestyle, eating less protein might be a simpler way to achieve a longer and healthier life than sticking to strict calorie cuts. Traditionally, many studies have linked reducing calorie intake to better health and longevity, but not everyone can maintain such diets.
This new review, which analyzed over 350 studies and was published in Cell Press Blue, suggests that focusing on reducing protein rather than calories could yield similar metabolic benefits without the difficulties associated with calorie-cutting diets.
The studies reviewed showed that lower protein intake is linked to improvements in metabolism, changes in nutrient signaling, less cellular damage, and better maintenance of cells.
One key factor is a hormone called fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21). When protein intake is restricted, FGF21 levels rise, contributing to increased energy use, lower inflammation, improved blood sugar levels, and potentially a longer lifespan.
The review highlighted three important amino acids—methionine, isoleucine, and valine—that play significant roles in protein function. In people who do not exercise regularly, high amounts of these amino acids might keep certain growth processes active all the time. This continuous stimulation can lead to cellular damage, inflammation, and weight gain over the years.
Dudley Lamming, a leading researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, noted that while protein is essential for muscle growth and response to exercise in active individuals, most sedentary people might be consuming more protein than necessary, which could have harmful health effects.
Researchers caution that their findings are not a blanket recommendation to consume very low protein levels. Due to the nature of the review, it identifies patterns in existing research but does not establish direct cause and effect in humans. They emphasize the need for more long-term studies to see if these metabolic benefits really lead to longer lives.
The authors encourage public health guidelines to move away from one-size-fits-all recommendations and instead consider a person’s age and activity level when suggesting protein intake.
High protein intake remains crucial for pregnant women and older adults, who might face muscle loss as they age. In contrast, the general inactive population may benefit from a more tailored approach to their protein needs.
