Brief: Arrest of Suspected Cartel Leader Linked to High-Profile Murders
Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, also known as “El R-1,” has been arrested in connection with the killings of a mayor and a social media influencer in Mexico. Authorities say he led a violent criminal group affiliated with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
Mexican officials claim Álvarez Ayala financed the assassination of Uruapan Mayor Carlos Manzo in November 2025, as well as the May 2025 murder of beauty influencer Valeria Márquez. Reports indicate that Márquez was shot during a livestream from her salon, and her former boyfriend, who is Álvarez Ayala’s son, was said to have threatened her.
Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch revealed that Los Rs, the group led by Álvarez Ayala, operates in several regions, including Michoacán and Jalisco. The organization is known for extortion, murder, and drug trafficking, causing significant harm to local communities.
In the case of Márquez, the investigation into her death is being treated as femicide. Video evidence reportedly shows a man entering her salon before fatally shooting her. Officials suggest the act was coordinated by Álvarez Ayala in response to conflicts related to familial ties.
Currently, Álvarez Ayala is held at a maximum-security prison while investigations continue. Authorities have also arrested multiple individuals related to both murders, emphasizing their commitment to tackling organized crime in the region.
The CJNG is regarded as one of the most powerful drug cartels globally, with recent sanctions imposed on numerous individuals connected to the organization.
