Punch Pubs Celebrates World Cup Surge in Sales

Punch Pubs Reports Sales Surge Thanks to World Cup

Punch Pubs, one of the largest pub groups in the UK, is celebrating a significant rise in sales due to the excitement of the World Cup. With 1,310 locations across the country, including 50 new pubs acquired this year, the company has seen a boost in patronage during England’s matches.

In recent weeks, crowds have gathered at Punch venues to catch the FIFA World Cup games on big screens. With England’s success leading them to the semi-finals, the company reported a staggering 59% increase in sales on match days compared to the previous year. This increase reflects the performance of their directly managed pubs versus those run by tenants.

Leading up to the tournament, Punch’s revenues had already shown growth, hitting £275 million in the 40 weeks ending May 17, a 9% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Sales growth has been aided by the acquisition of new locations, including 30 pubs from the McMullen brewery and additional purchases of 24 sites on the horizon. The company’s underlying earnings rose by 6.6% to £75.9 million during this expansion phase.

Chief Executive Andy Spencer noted that the World Cup has played a pivotal role in boosting sales and revenues in recent weeks. He also expressed support for Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s initiative to reduce business rates by 20% for pubs, clubs, and live music venues in England. However, Spencer emphasized the need for further assistance for the hospitality sector.

“Last week’s announcement was a positive step forward,” he stated. “It shows that the Government is paying attention to an industry that is vital to our communities and the UK economy. However, we believe more can be done.”

Spencer is keen for a wider range of support that recognizes the hospitality sector as crucial for growth, helping to instill confidence in business owners and allowing for further investment. This, he argues, would not only enhance business prospects but also lead to the creation of more local, sustainable jobs.
