India Welcomes Jasprit Bumrah Back as Preparations Heat Up for Sri Lanka Test Series
India is set to receive a significant boost ahead of their Test series against Sri Lanka, with fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah declared fit to participate in both matches. Bumrah has been cleared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after recovering from an injury he sustained during the ODI series against England.
The pace specialist had to sit out the third ODI at Lord’s due to the injury. He was included in India’s Test squad but needed to pass a fitness assessment. His clearance is a great relief for the team, which is grappling with several player injuries ahead of the two-Test series starting in Galle on August 15.
A senior BCCI official informed that Bumrah has successfully completed the required fitness tests, making him an essential part of the team’s strategy.
A Game-Changer for India
Bumrah’s return strengthens India’s bowling lineup during a crucial phase of the World Test Championship (WTC). Currently, India stands fifth in the WTC standings, just ahead of Sri Lanka. The team requires victories to secure its spot for the finals in 2027, making this series particularly vital.
To remain competitive, India aims to win seven out of their nine remaining Tests. A 2-0 series victory against Sri Lanka is crucial before heading to New Zealand for a tough away series later this year.
However, India’s preparations have been impacted by injuries. Fast bowler Harshit Rana is sidelined with a hamstring issue, while Nitish Reddy is recovering from a quadriceps injury. Washington Sundar will miss the first Test due to a hamstring problem, prompting selectors to bring in Saransh Jain, who has made a mark in domestic cricket. Akash Deep is also unavailable as he continues to recover from back stress reactions.
Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja make their return to the Test squad after being rested for India’s one-off Test against Afghanistan, which did not affect the WTC standings. The pace unit will also feature Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and newcomer Gurnoor Brar, who earned his maiden call-up following an impressive performance in domestic matches.
The first Test will commence in Galle on August 15, followed by the second Test in Colombo starting August 23. India will carry fond memories into this series, having previously achieved a 3-0 whitewash during their last visit to Sri Lanka in 2017.
With Bumrah back in action, India hopes to kick off this critical stretch of their WTC campaign on a high note, despite missing some key players.
