KUMAMOTO: Death Toll Rises from Recent Earthquake in Southwestern Japan
The number of fatalities from the strong earthquake that struck southwestern Japan earlier this week has increased to 34, up from 25, according to officials from Kumamoto Prefecture.
In addition to the casualties, six individuals have sustained serious injuries due to the earthquake that hit late on Tuesday. The quake caused significant damage, with buildings collapsing, roads cracking, and disrupting supply chains.
Communities in Need of Water and Heat Relief After Earthquake
Many survivors are now facing challenges, struggling to access clean water and relief from the intense heat. Nearly half of the deaths were linked to two major incidents—a paper mill operated by Nippon Paper Industries that was severely damaged, and a shopping mall run by Aeon, where there was a suspected gas explosion.
Authorities are working to assist affected communities and restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
