Veteran actress Shabana Azmi has shared that she has been diagnosed with H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, which has led her to miss a student protest at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park this past Friday. The actress took to social media to announce her health situation, noting that she needs to stay in isolation for the next five days.
Azmi has been a strong supporter of student protests, particularly regarding the alleged leak of the NEET exam papers. In the days leading up to her diagnosis, she actively participated in events at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, where she joined students in rallies, including the “Chalo Sansad” march and expressed her support to those on hunger strikes.
In her message to followers about missing the Mumbai protest, Azmi explained that while she intended to show her solidarity, her health situation prevented her from attending. She expressed her connection to the protestors, saying, “My dear Mumbaikars, I was meant to join your protest yesterday, but I’ve come down with H1N1 and need to remain in isolation for the next five days.”
Despite her illness, she remains engaged with the movement, receiving updates from participants. Azmi praised the bravery of the students involved, many of whom participated in a protest for the first time. She conveyed her admiration for their determination and how their actions have inspired her.
Azmi also shared a poem from her late father, the esteemed poet Kaifi Azmi, in her message. Unlike many celebrities who support causes only online, she actively took part in demonstrations—marching with students, addressing crowds, and even helping to provide food for those on hunger strikes.
