Global ChatGPT Outage Affects Thousands of Users
ChatGPT is currently facing significant downtime, leaving many users around the world unable to access the service. Reports gathered by Downdetector show that users in countries like India and the United States are experiencing issues.
In India alone, there were approximately 1,475 reports, with 79% of these related to the web version of ChatGPT. The majority of these complaints came from major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Bengaluru. Meanwhile, the United States saw even more issues, totaling 3,243 reports, primarily affecting the web version as well. Major cities like San Francisco and New York were particularly hard hit. In the UK, around 3,088 reports were recorded, with most coming from London.
OpenAI Confirms the Issue
OpenAI has recognized the problem on their status page, stating, “We’re currently experiencing issues.” They mentioned that they are implementing solutions while monitoring the situation. The outage started recently and is affecting various regions, including North America, Europe, and Asia. This disruption is concerning for users who rely on ChatGPT for both personal and professional needs.
The status of the service has been inconsistent, with updates switching between showing an active issue and normal operation. Such fluctuations are often seen during login-related troubles, where users might face issues even if the underlying chatbot is working fine. As of now, OpenAI hasn’t provided any detailed reasons for the problems or an expected timeline for when services will be restored.
User Experiences During the Downtime
Users have been expressing their frustrations on platforms like Downdetector and X (formerly Twitter). Many have reported trouble with the login or authentication process rather than issues with the chat functionality itself. Common problems include being stuck on loading screens, getting logged out unexpectedly, and being unable to access chats. Both free and paid accounts are experiencing these difficulties, and mobile app users have reported similar issues.
Specific problems reported include failed logins, recurring authentication errors, chat history not loading, and receiving “service unavailable” messages when trying to send a prompt. This outage follows another disruption just two days prior, leading some users to question the reliability of the service.
What to Do If You’re Affected
For those unable to access ChatGPT, here are a few steps that may help:
- Refresh the page or close and reopen the app.
- Log out and log back in instead of just refreshing.
- Visit the status page for updates.
- Try using the mobile app if the website is unresponsive, or vice versa.
This situation is still developing, and more updates are expected as OpenAI works on resolving the issues.
