Brief Scores: India (126/3 in 13.2 overs) defeated Zimbabwe (125/7) by seven wickets in the opening T20I match held in Harare. Sooryavanshi scored a notable 50 runs.

In a remarkable comeback, Indian fast bowler Mayank Yadav described his two-year injury layoff from international cricket as the hardest time in his young career. The frequent injuries forced him to face mental challenges during what should have been key development years.

Making his return to the national team for the first time since October 2024, the Delhi pacer impressed everyone with figures of 2 for 18 in four overs against Zimbabwe. His outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match title after he struck with his very first delivery and kept the batters on their toes with his rapid bowling.

After India’s convincing win, Mayank shared his struggles, saying, “It was very tough. Those two years were challenging for me personally. I was just 22 or 23, and having to deal with so much at that age was not easy.” He added that representing his country has always been a dream, and that pushed him to come back strong.

The 24-year-old found the conditions in Harare well-suited to his bowling style, allowing him to settle back into the game quickly. “I’ve heard a lot about how fast bowlers can do well in Zimbabwe, and this is my first time in Harare. The pitch was really helpful, and that made it easier for me to contribute to the team’s success,” he noted.

Mayank also applauded captain Shreyas Iyer for empowering the bowlers and staying engaged with his tactical input. “It’s my first time playing under his captaincy, and I felt he had a lot of confidence in us bowlers. Whenever he offered advice, it boosted my confidence,” he said, appreciating the freedom he felt while playing under Iyer.

India featured a relatively new pace attack, also including Ashok Sharma and Prince Yadav. Mayank mentioned the camaraderie among the bowlers during Zimbabwe’s innings, saying, “We might not talk much about pace, but we have strong bonds. I shared insights from my first over with Ashok and Prince about the best approach to take.”

His return follows a frustrating period where injuries hindered his development, including not being part of the India A tour to Sri Lanka earlier this year and facing challenges in the IPL.

Against Zimbabwe, Mayank showed promise right from the start, maintaining impressive speed and control throughout his spell.

Praise for Young Talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

During the match, Mayank also commended the 15-year-old opener, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose first international half-century helped India chase down the target smoothly. “His batting is incredible. The shots he played are surprising for someone so young and inexperienced. It’s thrilling to witness,” he expressed.

Mayank believes Sooryavanshi has a bright future ahead. “He has amazing talent at such a young age. It’s impressive to see him perform like that, especially against us in the IPL,” he stated.

He added that Sooryavanshi’s milestone, after a challenging series of matches, would serve as a huge confidence boost for the young player. “Getting a first half-century for the country is always special, especially for a 15-year-old. The way he dominated the bowling was fantastic,” Mayank concluded.

This match marks a positive start for India and showcases the potential of its emerging talents.
