India Shines at Commonwealth Games 2026 Opening Ceremony
In an exciting start to the Commonwealth Games 2026, Olympic champions Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain led the Indian team into the opening ceremony in Glasgow. King’s Charles III officially opened the Games on Wednesday.
Carrying the Indian flag, Mirabai and Lovlina entered the OVO Hydro to a warm welcome, joined by their 126 teammates during the Parade of Nations. The Indian team received one of the biggest cheers of the night as the 11-day sports event kicked off in Scotland.
The opening ceremony marked the beginning of the 33rd Commonwealth Games, gathering over 3,000 athletes from 74 countries. The competition will take place over 10 sports at four venues, making this the smallest Games in over 30 years. Six sports will also include integrated para events, emphasizing inclusivity.
King Charles III, alongside Queen Camilla, officially launched the Games. He read a message from the King’s Baton, which was delivered during the Commonwealth Day celebrations at Buckingham Palace in March 2025.
Before the event, the King met with baton bearers from various Commonwealth nations and greeted Scottish First Minister John Swinney, the Duke of Edinburgh, and other officials.
Addressing the athletes and attendees, the King celebrated the spirit of the Commonwealth, saying, “The arrival of the Batons today, carried by inspiring athletes, reminds us of the Commonwealth as a unique family of nations. We celebrate the talent and dedication of every athlete and eagerly await your achievements.”
He also mentioned the King’s Baton Relay Clean Oceans Plastic Campaign, which removed over one million pieces of plastic from waterways across Commonwealth countries. “Let’s work together to build a harmonious future for our families and our planet,” he encouraged.
The ceremony featured a mix of Scottish tradition and modern entertainment. The audience enjoyed performances from mascot Finnie and were surprised by Scottish wrestler Grado dressed as a teacake. A Doctor Who-themed segment added excitement, with the TARDIS appearing and cycling champion Sir Chris Hoy emerging to cheers.
Glasgow stepped up to host the Games after Australia’s Victoria state withdrew due to rising costs. Building on its success from the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow organized this edition using existing venues, operating on a budget of approximately £160 million, nearly 60% less than Birmingham 2022.
India’s 126-member team will compete in eight able-bodied sports and five para sports. Mirabai, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and Lovlina, who took home bronze in boxing, proudly carried the flag for India.
India’s competition kicks off on Thursday with medal events. However, the country’s medal prospects may be impacted as popular sports like shooting, wrestling, badminton, hockey, and cricket are not included in this year’s events.
At the last Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, India secured fourth place with a total of 61 medals, including 22 gold. The next edition of the Commonwealth Games is set to take place in Ahmedabad in 2030, featuring a full roster of 17 sports.
