New Study Links Heart Attacks to Microplastics in Blood
Researchers from Italy have made an alarming discovery: patients having severe heart attacks tend to have higher levels of microplastics in their blood compared to individuals with more stable heart conditions. This finding comes from a study involving 61 patients who underwent angiograms, a procedure that examines blood vessels.
The study revealed that nearly 84% of those experiencing a severe heart attack had detectable microplastics in their blood. In stark contrast, only 40% of patients with chronic heart disease had similar findings, and just 32% of those with normal coronary arteries showed any signs of microplastics.
Led by Dr. Raffaele Marfella from the University of Campania Luigi Vanvitelli, the study highlighted polyethylene, a common plastic found in items like bags and bottles, which was present in 97% of the patients with detectable microplastics.
Michelle Routhenstein, a preventive cardiology dietitian, noted that this research adds to ongoing discussions about the potential impact of microplastics on heart health. However, she emphasized that while these results are significant, they must be viewed within the broader picture of environmental health risks.
She pointed out, “These findings emphasize the need to pay attention to environmental factors that may lead to health issues, but they do not definitively prove that plastics cause heart attacks.” Routhenstein mentioned that previous studies have also pointed to the presence of microplastics in arterial plaque, although she cautioned that this study has its limits.
One of the significant factors found was that a history of smoking stood out as the strongest predictor of detectable plastic particles in the blood. “This was an observational study, which means it can show an association but not declare cause and effect,” she explained. The study’s limited sample size from a single country also means that its conclusions may not be universally applicable.
Routhenstein further noted that various health and environmental factors could complicate the findings. “Smoking and air pollution are linked to both heart disease and higher levels of plastic exposure, making it difficult to understand the exact effects of microplastics,” she added.
To lessen exposure to microplastics, experts recommend swapping out plastic containers for glass or ceramic ones, especially when cooking or storing food. “When reheating meals, it’s better to use glass rather than plastic containers,” Routhenstein advised. She also suggested being mindful of the use of plastic bottles and single-use containers, particularly those that are heated.
In summary, while this new study suggests a possible link between microplastics and heart health, more extensive research is needed to determine cause and effect. Taking steps to reduce plastic exposure can be one aspect of maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle.
