France Faces Deadly Heat Wave: Over 5,700 Excess Deaths Recorded

France has seen more than 5,700 extra deaths during a severe heat wave this summer, according to a report from Public Health France on Wednesday. This marks the highest heat-related fatalities in the country in over 20 years.

From June 17 to July 2, authorities anticipated around 15,910 deaths but instead recorded 21,674. The staggering difference of 5,764 excess deaths is 36% higher than expected.

The heat wave brought sweltering temperatures, with many areas experiencing highs above 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Public Health France described this heat wave as “unprecedented,” noting its early arrival, intense heat, and long duration. This period coincided with many people still engaged in work and school activities, affecting the entire population.

Deaths Across Various Settings

The increase in fatalities was observed in hospitals, nursing homes, and private residences. The analysis focused on individuals aged 15 and older, revealing that mortality rates began to rise from age 45 onward. Older adults, particularly those aged 75 and above, accounted for around two-thirds of the increased death toll, totaling at least 3,719 excess deaths.

The Paris area was hit the hardest, bearing 1,999 excess deaths, more than 80% above typical expectations. This year marked the highest heat-related excess mortality in France since 2003. Estimates suggest that about 15,000 more individuals died than would normally be expected for this time.

The hottest days of the heat wave were recorded on June 24 and 25, with a national average of 86 degrees Fahrenheit and some regions exceeding 104 degrees.

European Impact and Burial Challenges

Throughout Europe, over 10,000 excess deaths were reported during this extreme heat, although these numbers may be revised as more data becomes available. Funeral homes in Paris have been overwhelmed by the increase in bodies, with some mortuaries reaching full capacity and unable to accept new arrivals.

Health officials have indicated that the current figures are preliminary and will be adjusted as further analysis is completed in the coming weeks.
