Italian Authorities Seize Large Cocaine Shipment Hidden in Bananas
Italian officials announced a major drug bust on Tuesday, reporting the seizure of about 1,700 pounds of cocaine concealed among pallets of bananas at a key port. The narcotics were carefully packed into 650 bundles inside a refrigerated shipping container that arrived from Ecuador’s main ports, according to the Guardia di Finanza, Italy’s financial police.
During a field inspection, authorities conducted tests that confirmed the substance was notably pure cocaine. This operation marks one of the largest drug seizures at the port in recent years, and if it had reached the streets, it could have fetched an estimated 250 million euros—or nearly $290 million.
Officials stated that this significant capture followed a detailed analysis of shipping routes connecting South America to the port of Vado Ligure, which is a crucial entry point for goods into Europe and a target for international drug traffickers.
“The operation is part of our ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking and protect vulnerable populations who are often affected by these crimes,” the Guardia di Finanza emphasized.
This seizure comes shortly after U.S. Customs and Border Protection discovered over 1,100 pounds of cocaine hidden in a cabbage shipment at the Pharr Port of Entry in Texas, highlighting ongoing issues of drug smuggling across borders.
