The Commonwealth Games 2026: A Unique Edition Awaits in Glasgow
The Commonwealth Games 2026 is set to kick off in Glasgow on July 23, marking a significant shift from previous editions. Initially intended to be hosted by Australia’s Victoria state, the Games lost its host due to escalating costs. Glasgow stepped in to take the reins, but with a notable change: this year, the Games will showcase only 10 sports, leaving out events like hockey, badminton, shooting, and wrestling to maintain financial stability.
This scaled-down format has noticeably impacted India’s chances for medals. After a successful campaign in the 2022 Birmingham Games, where India won 61 medals, the country is sending a 126-member team to Glasgow, viewing this event as a crucial step toward the Asian Games in Japan just two months ahead.
Anju Bobby George, a senior official from the Athletics Federation of India, predicts India will secure about 30 medals, roughly half of what was achieved in Birmingham.
