Veteran Photojournalist Raghu Rai Passes Away at 83

Renowned Indian photojournalist Raghu Rai has sadly passed away at the age of 83, following a brave battle with cancer. He spent his final days in a private hospital in New Delhi, where his son, fellow photographer Nitin Rai, shared the news of his father’s deteriorating health.

Rai had been diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago, which was reportedly treated. However, the disease spread to his stomach and later to his brain. Alongside these challenges, he also faced age-related health issues.

The family has announced that his last rites will take place at the Lodhi Cremation Ground in New Delhi at 4 PM today.

A recipient of the Padma Shri award, Rai was a prominent figure in Indian journalism for over five decades. He captured critical moments in history, including the devastating Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. In 1977, he made history as the first Indian photographer to join Magnum Photos, thanks to a nomination from the celebrated French photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson.

His legacy will continue to inspire many in the field of journalism and photography.
