Bernie Sanders Raises Alarm on AI Risks

US Senator Bernie Sanders is sounding the alarm about artificial intelligence, sharing concerns from top scientists in the field about the potential dangers this technology could bring to humanity. In a recent post on social media, Sanders highlighted the views of leading AI researchers, including Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton and prominent scientist Yoshua Bengio, who warn that AI could evolve beyond human control.

Sanders expressed frustration over Congress’s lack of action since over 1,000 experts, including well-known figures like Elon Musk, signed a letter in 2023 highlighting the risks of AI. The letter raised important questions about whether society should allow machines to take over jobs and potentially replace humans in critical roles. Despite the urgency of these issues, Sanders noted that there has been little progress in Congress or internationally regarding AI regulation.

His concerns aren’t limited to future risks; they extend to current problems caused by AI. Sanders pointed out the significant layoffs attributed to AI and its negative effects on children’s mental health and privacy rights. These problems are not just potential scenarios—they are already influencing lives.

New Initiatives for AI Dialogue

To foster discussion on these pressing matters, Sanders plans to host a meeting at the US Capitol with AI researchers from both the US and China. This event, aimed at building international cooperation during a time of geopolitical tensions, will be open to the public via livestream.

Additionally, Sanders is pushing for legislation, alongside Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, that seeks to halt the construction of new AI data centers until stronger safety measures are established. This proposal has gained traction in recent months, moving from an unconventional idea to a significant topic in policy discussions.

In his statement, Sanders emphasized the drastic changes AI is forcing upon our world. He stated, “Every day, we see headlines about how AI is reshaping our lives—in terms of jobs, children’s welfare, privacy, and even our political systems.” He also warned that if AI surpasses human intelligence, the consequences could be severe.

Sanders aims to ensure that the development of AI remains a force for good and doesn’t pose a threat to civilization. He invites the public to join the important conversation about AI’s future, emphasizing that collective action is needed to navigate these challenges responsibly.
