Tilak Varma Shines as India Chases Down 166 Against England
In a thrilling match on January 25, Tilak Varma proved his skills beyond his years by leading India to a successful chase of 166 runs against England. The young player ended the innings not out at 72 runs off 55 balls, showcasing his talent on a challenging pitch where many established players struggled.
Varma played a key role by forming important partnerships, first with Washington Sundar, and then with Ravi Bishnoi, ultimately securing a nail-biting 2-wicket victory for India. His partnership with Sundar yielded 38 runs from 28 balls, helping to stabilize the Indian innings during a tough period.
After Sundar was dismissed, Varma stayed calm and skillfully navigated the final five overs. Sundar expressed his admiration for Varma’s performance and promised to treat him to a delicious feast the next time they meet in Chennai. This promise was made in response to a light-hearted comment from cricketer-turned-broadcaster Abhinav Mukund about a crispy dosa that Varma had requested on social media before the game.
"We’re leaving tomorrow, which is unfortunate, but when he’s back in Chennai, I’ll make sure to treat him," Sundar said, highlighting the camaraderie among the players.
Varma’s Composed Performance
Throughout the match, Varma displayed remarkable maturity. Despite a quick start, he had to adapt as wickets fell around him. While some teammates were dismissed after poor shots, Varma maintained his focus and continued to score. When he found himself without support, he decided to take control, carefully selecting his shots and managing the strike effectively.
"It was a bit two-paced. I spoke with Gautam sir yesterday and he advised me to play according to the situation," Varma mentioned afterward.
Support from Ravi Bishnoi, who hit two boundaries in just five balls, also helped alleviate some pressure from Varma, making it easier for him to finish off the game.
"I told him to stick to his game and hit into the gaps. His innings really made it easier for us," Varma reflected.
With this performance, Varma solidified his place as an emerging star in Indian cricket, remaining unbeaten in his last four T20 matches with impressive scores of 107, 120, 19, and 72.
After the match, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav shared his thoughts on Varma’s performance, stating, "I’m really pleased with how Tilak played, taking charge and showing great responsibility."
Yadav emphasized the team’s strategy of aggressive play but acknowledged the need for adaptability during challenging moments, which was crucial in securing their victory.
Looking ahead, the Indian team will head to Rajkot for the next match in the series, scheduled for January 28 at 7 p.m. IST.
