A luxury yacht valued at $9.1 million sank in the Mediterranean Sea on Tuesday, just a few days after being handed over to its new owner. The luxury vessel, known as Angiola II, was operating off the coast of Porto Cervo, a popular destination on the Italian island of Sardinia, when it encountered engine troubles that led to a fire.
The fire caused damage to seals on the yacht, allowing water to flow in and forcing the boat to tilt onto its side. Fortunately, all 14 guests aboard were able to escape without injury and were rescued by nearby boats.
Footage from the scene showed the yacht precariously leaning before it sank. The yacht’s owner, an Italian businessman, was reportedly the last one off the vessel.
The Angiola II sank to around 23 feet deep between L’Isola dei Cappuccini and Capo Ferro, located in Sardinia’s upscale Costa Smeralda region. It will be monitored until a recovery team can retrieve it from the seabed.
This yacht had the capacity to host 10 guests, featuring five cabins and a crew of five. With four engines, it was designed to reach speeds of up to 28 knots.
