Jerod Mayo Steps Away from Football for the Second Time
Former New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo has officially stepped away from the football world once again. After spending some time in business following his playing career, Mayo recently accepted a position at Fifth Down Capital, a private equity firm, as a managing director.
Mayo, who shared the news on LinkedIn, was a first-round draft pick for the Patriots in 2008. He enjoyed eight successful seasons with the team before moving on to work as the vice president of business development at Optum, a part of UnitedHealth Group, for three years.
In 2019, Mayo returned to the Patriots, this time as the inside linebackers coach. He extended his contract in early 2023, with an arrangement to eventually succeed Bill Belichick as head coach.
After the 2023 season, Belichick was let go, and Mayo stepped up to lead the team. Unfortunately, following a challenging season where the Patriots finished with a 4-13 record, the team decided to part ways with Mayo.
At 40 years old, there remains a possibility that Mayo could return to coaching in the future. For now, though, he is moving on from football and embracing a new chapter in his career.
