Cruise Ship Hantavirus Scare Claims Three Lives, Warns WHO

Hantavirus Outbreak on Cruise Ship Claims Lives

A worrying hantavirus outbreak aboard a cruise ship in the Atlantic has resulted in three fatalities and left a number of passengers unwell, according to a recent announcement from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The WHO confirmed one hantavirus case through laboratory tests, with five other cases awaiting confirmation. Of those affected, three people have sadly died, and one individual is currently in intensive care in South Africa.

The WHO is working with local authorities and the ship’s operators to facilitate the medical evacuation of two passengers showing symptoms, while also assessing the health risks for others still aboard.

“Investigations are in progress, including more lab tests and epidemiological studies,” the WHO stated. “Medical assistance is being provided to both passengers and crew members. We are also sequencing the virus.”

The outbreak is linked to the MV Hondius, a Dutch-flagged cruise ship sailing off the coast of West Africa. Oceanwide Expeditions, which operates the ship, reported that three passengers lost their lives during the journey, with one currently receiving treatment in Johannesburg.

Two crew members are also in need of urgent medical care. Despite the situation, Cape Verde authorities have not yet permitted the safe transfer of ill passengers to medical facilities on land.

Local health officials have boarded the cruise to evaluate the circumstances but have not approved disembarkations. Oceanwide Expeditions emphasized the importance of providing adequate medical care to those showing symptoms on the vessel.

Hantavirus infections generally occur through contact with droppings or urine from infected rodents, leading to serious respiratory conditions. Even though it’s considered rare, the virus can potentially spread between humans and result in significant illness.

“There is no specific cure for hantavirus, but early intervention can improve outcomes,” the WHO noted.

As this situation develops, the WHO has alerted global health authorities in accordance with health regulations. Oceanwide Expeditions is in the process of gathering further details and coordinating responses for the affected individuals.
