Crew Safe After Cargo Ship Assault Near Strait of Hormuz

Trump Sees Iran’s Peace Proposal as Inadequate Amid Continuing Blockade

President Donald Trump has expressed that Iran’s recent peace offer is not enough, particularly following a confirmed attack near the Strait of Hormuz. As the U.S. maintains its naval blockade, Iran faces increasing economic pressure due to blocked oil revenues.

On Sunday, a large cargo ship was attacked by several smaller vessels while navigating close to the Strait of Hormuz, about 11 nautical miles from Sirik, Iran. The ship’s captain reported the incident to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which confirmed that all crew members are safe and there has been no environmental damage. Nearby vessels have been urged to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities as authorities investigate the attack.

This incident highlights growing tensions in a region known for its sensitive maritime routes. Iranian state media have reported that Tehran’s proposal includes a demand for control over the Strait of Hormuz. The deputy speaker of Iran’s parliament, Ali Nikzad, emphasized that Iran will not retreat from its stance regarding the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and serves as a crucial route for global energy shipments. It is considered a key chokepoint, with about one-fifth of the world’s petroleum passing through it in recent years.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack on Sunday, and the identity of the cargo ship remains undisclosed. The UKMTO is continuing to investigate the matter.

The situation in the Strait has escalated with past incidents where Iranian fast-attack boats have harassed or seized vessels. As tensions between Iran, the U.S., and Israel persist, commercial shipping continues to be caught in the crossfire.

In summary, the ongoing situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains critical not just for regional stability but also for global energy supply, and it will be important to monitor further developments.
