Listening to Music Can Boost Workout Endurance, New Study Finds
A recent study reveals that listening to your favorite music while exercising can help you push through for longer without feeling as tired. Researchers from the University of Jyväskylä in Finland discovered that people who chose their own music could improve their endurance by nearly 20% during intense workouts.
The research, published in the journal Psychology of Sport and Exercise, involved 29 active adults who took part in two cycling sessions, each at roughly 80% of their maximum effort. One session was conducted in silence, while participants could listen to their selected songs during the other.
On average, those who listened to music were able to sustain their workouts for about 36 minutes, nearly six minutes longer than those who exercised without music. Interestingly, their heart rates and other physical indicators stayed the same, suggesting that the music didn’t change how hard their bodies were working but rather how they perceived the effort.
Lead researcher Andrew Danso noted, “Self-selected music doesn’t change your fitness level; it simply helps you tolerate sustained effort for longer.” Familiar tunes might distract from discomfort and make it easier to maintain focus.
Danso emphasized that allowing individuals to choose motivating music may lead to more effective training, potentially fostering better fitness results and helping people stick with their exercise routines.
Experts agree that the benefits may stem from a change in mindset. Beverly Hills psychiatrist Carole Lieberman remarked that exercising to enjoyable music can shift the perception of the workout, making it feel less like a chore and more like a fun activity.
However, it’s important to note that the study has its limitations, including the small sample size of 29 participants, all of whom were already physically active. Additionally, the exercises focused specifically on high-intensity cycling, which may influence how applicable the results are to other workout types.
Overall, embracing your favorite music during workouts could be a simple yet effective way to enhance endurance and enjoyment in fitness routines.
