Rubio Stands Firm: Panama Canal Sovereignty is Untouchable, Warns China

U.S. Warns China Over Panama Shipping Dispute

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has issued a strong warning to China, declaring that “the sovereignty of our hemisphere is non-negotiable.” This statement follows claims from the U.S. and its regional partners that China is holding Panama-flagged ships amid growing tensions over control of canal ports.

In a collaborative statement with countries like Bolivia, Costa Rica, Guyana, Paraguay, and Trinidad and Tobago, the U.S. condemned China’s actions as a “blatant attempt to politicize maritime trade,” arguing that it infringes on regional sovereignty. This situation is being framed as part of a larger strategic struggle for dominance over crucial global trade routes.

The dispute involves the detention of Panama-flagged vessels, drawing attention to China’s influence and interest in the region. Critics are increasingly linking this incident to other contentious chokepoints, such as the Strait of Hormuz, suggesting a wider competition between Beijing and Washington over global trade rules.

The Panama situation has escalated since Panama’s Supreme Court decision earlier this year, which overturned the legal framework supporting Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison’s control over key terminals by the Panama Canal. This waterway is vital, as it accounts for about 5% of global maritime trade.

Since early March, the U.S. has reported nearly 70 instances where Chinese authorities have detained Panama-flagged ships, a move American officials believe is meant to retaliate against Panama for its recent legal changes.

China expert Gordon Chang commented that Beijing’s actions in Panama reflect a broader pattern where economic leverage is used to exert influence in various regions. He noted that the U.S. is increasingly pushing back, not just against China but also against its regional allies.

Chang pointed out that former President Trump aimed to disrupt China’s strategies by addressing relationships with nations like Venezuela, Cuba, and Iran, which he viewed as proxies for Chinese power.

Furthermore, Chang argued that the tensions in the Strait of Hormuz connect directly to this strategic rivalry. He stated that closing this crucial route would not only impact Iran but would also significantly shake China’s economic stability.

He accused China of hypocrisy regarding trade, claiming that the country has long benefitted from the global trading system while using it for political ends. Chang emphasized that the current cycle of actions and responses began with China’s own aggressive tactics.

In response to the accusations of politicizing trade, China’s Foreign Ministry rejected the claims as “entirely baseless.” Officials stated they would protect China’s interests in Panama and accused the U.S. of inflating the situation for its own strategic gain.

Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu insisted that the inspections of vessels were routine and compliant with laws. He urged other nations to remain vigilant against negative influences and misinterpretations regarding China’s actions.

This spotlight on the Panama Canal highlights the ongoing geopolitical struggles and the challenges of global trade in a rapidly shifting international landscape.
