Punjab Kings Face First Loss of IPL Season Against Rajasthan Royals
In an exciting match on Tuesday, April 28, Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered their first defeat of the Indian Premier League season, falling to Rajasthan Royals (RR) in Mullanpur. Captain Shreyas Iyer highlighted issues with his team’s bowling during the chase on a tricky pitch.
PBKS put up a solid total of 222 thanks to a late surge from Marcus Stoinis, but Iyer noted that the pitch’s slow and tacky conditions were not capitalized on by their bowlers, allowing RR to take charge.
“I believe 222 was a good score, especially on this kind of wicket,” Iyer stated after the match. “However, our execution with the ball wasn’t up to the mark.”
He particularly mentioned the crucial partnership between RR players Donovan Ferreira and Shubham Dubey, revealing that their strategy focused on using slower balls and yorkers, which didn’t go as planned. RR ultimately won the match by six wickets with four balls remaining.
“We wanted to focus on slower deliveries and yorkers, but we didn’t execute well,” Iyer added. “Credit to them; Dubey and Ferreira played excellently. In this format, many players have adapted to an aggressive style from the start. It’s challenging for bowlers to make plans, and execution is key. Today just wasn’t our day.”
PBKS Falls Short in Key Moments
During the middle overs, PBKS had a good chance as their off-spin duo, Harpreet Brar and veteran Yuzvendra Chahal, tried to apply pressure on RR. Chahal briefly turned the tide in PBKS’s favor by dismantling RR’s middle order, returning impressive stats of 3 wickets for 36 runs in four overs. Brar, who played his first game of the season, was economical but couldn’t claim any wickets.
This match marked PBKS’s first loss after a strong unbeaten streak, which also included a no-result against Kolkata Knight Riders.
“This is a valuable lesson for us,” Iyer reflected. “It was one of those games where nothing went our way. In hindsight, we can see what we could have done differently, but we must keep our heads up and move forward.”
PBKS is set to face Gujarat Titans at Narendra Modi Stadium on May 3, while RR will return home to take on Delhi Capitals in Jaipur on May 1.
