Gaza Set for First Elections in 22 Years Amid Uncertain Political Landscape
On Saturday, residents of Deir al-Balah in Gaza will vote for local leaders for the first time in over two decades. This event is notable, yet experts caution that it could allow Hamas to retain its grip on power during ongoing tensions in the region.
Jonathan Schanzer, Executive Director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, highlighted the risks of holding elections in unstable environments. He recalled the 2006 U.S. endorsement of Palestinian elections, which resulted in Hamas’s victory and subsequent conflict. Schanzer warned that in places like Gaza, where Hamas wields significant influence, elections can lead to further complications.
Currently, four parties are competing in the Deir al-Balah elections. To run, candidates must support previous agreements made by the Palestine Liberation Organization, including recognizing Israel and committing to a two-state solution. However, there are concerns about one group, Deir al-Balah Unites Us, which is thought to have ties to Hamas, with candidates seen alongside Hamas leaders.
Ahmed Fouad Alkhatib from the Atlantic Council condemned the timing of the elections, stating that Gazans face severe repercussions for speaking out against Hamas. He argued that holding elections now threatens planned transitions aimed at reducing Hamas’s power and bringing stability to Gaza.
Furthermore, disarmament of Hamas remains a significant issue within ongoing negotiations. Despite reports of Hamas presenting partial disarmament proposals, experts like Schanzer are skeptical about the group’s willingness to relinquish control of its armed forces.
President Trump’s administration is under pressure to evaluate the possibility of delaying elections until Gaza’s situation stabilizes. The complexity of the region’s politics and ongoing violence poses a challenging backdrop for these elections.
As the community prepares to vote, many are looking closely at how these elections will unfold and what they mean for the future of governance in Gaza.
