India Falls Short Against Denmark in Uber Cup Opener

In their opening match of the Uber Cup, India faced a tough challenge against the host nation, Denmark, ultimately losing 2-3 on Friday, April 24. Olympic medallist PV Sindhu got India off to a strong start by defeating Denmark’s Line Christophersen, ranked No. 21 in the world. Sindhu clinched the match with scores of 21-13, 18-21, 21-17, giving India an early advantage of 1-0.

However, the team struggled to maintain their momentum. Unnati Hooda and Tanvi Sharma both faced defeats in their singles matches, allowing Denmark to take a 2-1 lead. In a crucial doubles match, Shruti Mishra and Priya Konjengbam also fell short, sealing a 3-1 victory for Denmark.

India did manage to finish on a high note with a consolation win in the final match, where Tanisha Crasto partnered with Sindhu to reduce the final score to 2-3 after Denmark’s Alexandra Boje and Christine Busch retired early.

Sindhu’s Battling Performance

Sindhu opened her match confidently, maintaining control in the first game. However, Christophersen upped her game in the second, challenging Sindhu fiercely. The match was tight, fluctuating with momentum until Christophersen managed to level the match.

In the decisive game, supported by her teammates, Sindhu found her focus again. Despite initial pressure from Christophersen, she matched her opponent point for point. Once the score reached 15-15, Sindhu seized control, winning six of the last seven points. She finished with a powerful smash and a precise winner down the line.

India Struggles in Singles and Doubles

After Sindhu’s encouraging start, things went downhill for India. Unnati Hooda fought hard but was edged out 12-21, 23-25 by Denmark’s Line Højmark Kjaersfeldt, who recently won a silver medal at the European Championships. Next up, Tanvi Sharma struggled against Amalie Schulz, losing despite winning the first game, with a final score of 21-19, 16-21, 16-21.

In the doubles match, Shruti Mishra and Priya Konjengbam faced a nail-biting contest but missed two match points, eventually losing 17-21, 21-11, 21-23.

Looking ahead, India aims to bounce back in their next match against Ukraine on Saturday, April 25, followed by a more formidable challenge against China on Monday, April 27.
