BJP and NC Leaders Clash Over Statehood in Jammu and Kashmir

Srinagar: A recent exchange between leaders of the BJP and the National Conference (NC) has heated up discussions about the future of statehood in Jammu and Kashmir. BJP leader Sushil Sharma referred to Omar Abdullah, the NC leader and former Chief Minister, as a “shehzaada” or prince, while insisting that statehood could not be restored simply because Abdullah was demanding it.

Sharma, who leads the opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, criticized Abdullah for constantly pushing the statehood issue. He stated that it’s unrealistic to expect statehood to be granted quickly just because of Abdullah’s lineage. Instead, Sharma urged the Chief Minister to focus on delivering promises like providing free electricity, LPG cylinders, and job opportunities.

In response, Abdullah took to social media, expressing his frustration with the BJP’s stance. He suggested that the people of Jammu and Kashmir were being punished for their electoral choices, referencing how they supported the NC in past elections. Abdullah also remarked humorously about Sharma’s recent absence from the assembly, suggesting that the legislative body functioned more smoothly without him around.

The NC’s minister, Javed Rana, emphasized that restoring statehood is not only a legal requirement but also essential for governance and development in the region. Additionally, NC spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq criticized Sharma’s comments as evidence of desperation within the BJP. Sadiq argued that resorting to personal attacks against an elected official indicates a troubling trend in political discourse. He stressed that Jammu and Kashmir deserves serious political engagement rather than trivial disputes.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the debate over statehood remains a critical issue for the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
