Former Afghanistan Cricketer Shapoor Zadran in Critical Condition

Shapoor Zadran, the former Afghanistan fast bowler, is currently in a fight for his life after being diagnosed with a rare and serious condition called Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). The 38-year-old is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of a hospital in New Delhi, where he has been since January.

The news has caused a wave of concern among fans and the cricket community, especially given Zadran’s significant role in Afghanistan’s cricket history. His brother, Ghamai Zadran, shared that Shapoor suffered from a severe infection, which affected his entire body, including tuberculosis that spread to his brain, as confirmed by MRI and CT scans.

HLH is a critical illness characterized by an overactive immune system, leading to severe inflammation and potential damage to crucial organs like the liver, spleen, and bone marrow. While it is more common in children, adults can also be affected, and treatment often requires extensive care.

Ghamai mentioned that after some earlier treatment, Shapoor initially felt better for about 20 days. However, he had to return to the hospital when the infection worsened.

Timeline of His Illness and Career Highlights

Zadran began feeling unwell in October last year, prompting doctors in Afghanistan to recommend he seek specialized care in India. Although he showed improvement and was discharged initially, he unfortunately relapsed within a short period, leading to his current hospitalization.

Throughout his career from 2009 to 2020, Zadran played in 44 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 36 T20Is, taking a total of 80 wickets. He is particularly remembered for his outstanding performance during the 2015 ICC World Cup, where he scored the winning runs in Afghanistan’s first-ever victory and emerged as a hero for the team. His last appearance for Afghanistan was on March 10, 2019, in a series against Ireland in Dehradun.

The cricketing world is rallying behind the former star, hoping for his swift recovery.
