Rajat Patidar’s IPL Glory: Two Titles, No T20I Chances

BCCI’s New T20I Squad Leaves Rajat Patidar’s Future in Limbo

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled its latest T20I squad for the next two years. While this marks a new chapter in Indian cricket, it also closes the door on a remarkable journey for Rajat Patidar, one of the game’s standout players. Despite winning two consecutive IPL titles, Patidar has not yet worn the Indian jersey for a T20 International, which raises eyebrows.

The Age Factor in Selection

At 33, Patidar finds himself in a tricky situation, facing a bias that often exists in many organizations, including sports. Companies and teams typically favor younger talent, associating youth with potential and growth. This focus on the future can sometimes overshadow the valuable experience and calm presence that seasoned players like Patidar bring.

While the IPL continues to introduce younger stars, such as the remarkable 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, this influx creates a crowded talent pool. With so many skilled players vying for limited spots, gaining a position in the national team has become increasingly difficult.

Patidar’s Resilience

Interestingly, Patidar’s attitude toward his exclusion from the national side speaks volumes about his character. In an interview with RCB’s YouTube channel, he expressed a refreshing mindset: “I don’t think too much about that. If they want to select me, that’s great; if not, that’s okay too.” Some may view this as a lack of ambition, but it shows strong self-confidence and emotional resilience. He understands the challenges he faces and has freed himself from the pressure of seeking validation from the selectors.

A Tactical Asset

Patidar’s absence from the team is puzzling for many cricket enthusiasts. His impressive performance in the recent IPL season, where he scored 501 runs at a striking rate of 192.69, proves he has what it takes. It’s not a matter of being unsuitable for the format; instead, the selectors seem focused on youth.

Even renowned players like Suryakumar Yadav were dropped due to form, highlighting the selectors’ willingness to make tough decisions. In contrast, Patidar’s consistent performance and leadership skills have solidified his role within a successful RCB team.

Selection Decisions

The decision-making process can be brutal, as former cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar mentioned. He noted the tough choice between Patidar and Shreyas Iyer for captaincy, attributing Iyer’s selection to his broader experience with different franchises. This scenario serves as a reminder of the limited roster size, which forces selectors to make difficult choices.

BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar reaffirmed this, stating, “There will always be players who miss out, but you can only pick 15.”

Patidar’s Legacy

Despite not being selected, Patidar’s achievements should not be seen as a failure. He has led a historically challenged franchise to back-to-back IPL victories, a feat that many cricketers only dream of. At 33, holding two IPL trophies, Patidar has created a legacy that resonates with countless fans, proving that personal accomplishments can indeed stand tall, even without international recognition.

Rajat Patidar may never don the Indian jersey, but his journey in cricket has already carved a place in the hearts of many, showcasing that sometimes, personal triumphs are more rewarding than accolades.
