Shreyas Iyer Takes Over as India’s T20 Captain
MUMBAI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially announced on Saturday that Shreyas Iyer will be the new captain of the Indian T20 team. This decision comes as a surprise for many, especially since Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup just three months ago, has been left out of the squad.
Historically, it’s rare for a World Cup-winning captain to be dropped for the next international series. In past instances, like Imran Khan in 1992 and Rohit Sharma, who stepped back from T20Is in 2024, those who achieved glory typically retired on a high note.
Shreyas earned his captaincy spot following an impressive IPL season, where he scored 776 runs at an exceptional strike rate of 237.3, hitting a record 72 sixes. Remarkably, this will be his first T20I match since December 2023. At 31, Shreyas is set to lead India into a new chapter that includes major tournaments like the 2028 Olympics and the T20 World Cup.
A New Leadership Role
Alongside Shreyas, Tilak Varma has been appointed as the vice-captain, taking over from Axar Patel. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized that Shreyas’s leadership experience and consistent performance made him the ideal candidate. “His accomplishments over the years speak for themselves. He has led various franchises, won the IPL with KKR, and navigated tough seasons. He was also close to making the World Cup squad, marking him as a solid choice for our leadership,” Agarkar stated.
While discussing Suryakumar’s exclusion, Agarkar noted the importance of evaluating the team’s direction after every World Cup. “It was a tough decision, especially after winning the World Cup. However, we considered Suryakumar’s form and the upcoming two-year cycle, believing this was the best path forward,” he explained.
Agarkar also praised newcomer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, highlighting his standout playoff performance with Rajasthan Royals, which showcased his ability to thrive under pressure.

In other news, Yashasvi Jaiswal has stepped in for the injured Virat Kohli in the ODI squad for the series against Afghanistan. Delhi’s Prince Yadav will continue with the team for the tours to Ireland and England after his ODI debut.
