Air Canada Suspends Flights to Cuba Due to Uncertainty
Air Canada announced on Friday that it is suspending its flights to Cuba indefinitely. The airline cited “political and economic uncertainty” on the island as a primary reason for this decision, which comes amid increasing pressure from the U.S. government.
The Montreal-based airline had previously announced a temporary halt on flights to Cuba scheduled to last until November. Now, they aim to provide their customers with clearer expectations regarding travel options.
In their statement, Air Canada emphasized the ongoing challenges facing Cuba, which have led to this suspension of service. Canadian tourists have traditionally been an important source of visitors to Cuba, but this flow has drastically decreased due to recent changes, including cuts to fuel supplies and rising tensions from U.S. policies.
Additionally, Blue Diamond Resorts, a major hotel chain in Cuba, revealed last week that it would be closing all 62 of its properties on the island, highlighting the impact of these challenges on tourism.
Since January, a fuel embargo has severely affected Cuba, leaving the country without adequate diesel supplies for generators crucial for its power supply, leading to extended power outages and water shortages. The situation has left many residents struggling, with the island relying on aid from countries like Mexico and China to meet basic needs including food and medical supplies.
