Shubman Gill Encouraged to Prioritize WTC and ODI World Cup to Sidestep Burnout

The selection committee has advised Shubman Gill, the captain for Test and ODI formats, to focus on red-ball and 50-over cricket leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup. This decision follows his impressive performance in the 2026 IPL, where he was a standout player.

On Saturday, the T20 squads for the UK Tour and the Asian Games were announced, but Gill was not included. The committee made this choice due to his commitments to important ICC events in a busy upcoming schedule.

Gill had a fantastic IPL season, scoring 732 runs with an excellent strike rate of over 163. However, with strong contenders like Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi already in the T20 squad, it became evident that adding another top-order batsman would be a tight fit.

Concerns have been raised regarding potential burnout for Gill. With the packed cricket calendar for the Indian team over the next 18 months, playing in all three formats could hinder his performance. He is expected to lead India in nine World Test Championship matches and participate in about 35 ODIs before the 2027 World Cup, according to a BCCI source.

The message is clear: Gill needs to focus on staying fit and ready for these key assignments while also leading the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.

Even though Gill is currently out of the T20 picture, he is expected to return to contention before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics or the T20 World Cup in Australia. As the source noted, there’s still plenty of time before those major events, and the emphasis now is on preparing for the immediate future and the challenges leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup.
