Thailand Unleashes Airstrikes Amid Rising Tensions Along Cambodia Border

Thailand and Cambodia Exchange Fire Amidst Tensions

On Monday evening, Thailand conducted airstrikes along its disputed border with Cambodia. The escalation in violence came as both nations accused each other of igniting the conflict, raising concerns about the stability of a ceasefire negotiated by former President Donald Trump.

Thai military officials claimed that Cambodian troops initiated the conflict, leading to one Thai soldier’s death and injuries to several others. In response, the Thai army evacuated civilians from nearby areas. Major General Winthai Suvaree stated that the Cambodian forces fired into Thai territory first, prompting airstrikes on specific military targets.

Cambodia has strongly denied these claims. Defense Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata suggested that Thailand was the initial aggressor and urged them to cease military actions.

Video footage shared by Cambodia’s Education Ministry depicted families hastily picking up their children from schools near the border, highlighting the fear caused by the recent clashes.

These hostilities follow prior skirmishes, including one on Sunday where Cambodia said Thai forces injured two of its soldiers. Both countries have exchanged accusations over who instigated that encounter as well.

The tensions persist despite a ceasefire established in October, designed to end a five-day conflict in July that resulted in numerous casualties. The ceasefire has already shown signs of strain, as Thailand recently reported injuries among its soldiers due to land mines in contested areas.

Long-standing territorial disputes, rooted in historical conflicts and colonial-era map interpretations, continue to fuel animosity between Thailand and Cambodia. Regional experts warn that without renewed diplomatic discussions, the risk of further confrontations could increase, potentially leading to a larger conflict.
