India’s indigenous Light Combat Aircraft, Tejas, received high praise from General Takehiro Morita, Chief of the Japan Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF). This recognition came after he took to the skies in the fighter jet during the Veer Guardian-2026 bilateral air exercise held in Rajasthan.
General Morita highlighted that Tejas represents India’s technological prowess and the Make in India initiative. His experience flying the aircraft allowed him to appreciate the nation’s homegrown defense capabilities up close. In a joint statement with Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, he expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality and the chance to fly the Tejas.
He noted that the flight made him reflect on the significant efforts made by both military personnel and the industry to develop this indigenous fighter jet. General Morita lauded the training environment of the Indian Air Force, stating that it offered tremendous value to the Japanese forces participating in the exercise.
Veer Guardian-2026 marks the second bilateral fighter exercise between India and Japan, and notably, it is the first time JASDF fighter aircraft have been deployed to India. This event builds on the ongoing defense cooperation between the two nations, which has been strengthened by various joint exercises since 2018.
General Morita shared that deploying Japanese fighter aircraft to India has been a long-held goal, especially following the previous visit of Indian Air Force jets to Japan three years ago. He emphasized that advanced training not only fosters mutual understanding but also strengthens trust and practical cooperation between the two countries.
The exercise featured a variety of advanced aircraft from both nations, including the Tejas, Rafale, and Su-30MKI from India, alongside Japan’s F-2A fighters. General Morita pointed out that the cooperation had evolved beyond simple exercises, focusing increasingly on enhancing operational capabilities.
The air exercise aligns with the broader strategic partnership between India and Japan, underscoring their shared commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region. General Morita indicated that as the geopolitical landscape becomes more complex, the importance of close defense ties continues to rise.
He also referenced recent high-level engagements between India and Japan, including a bilateral summit and defense ministerial meeting, which underscore their dedication to collaborative efforts that promote peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
The 14-day Veer Guardian exercise commenced after the arrival of JASDF F-2 fighter aircraft in India on September 8, providing an opportunity for both air forces to conduct advanced operational missions and professional exchanges. The LCA Tejas is recognized as a versatile, all-weather multi-role aircraft designed for a range of missions including air support and ground attacks.
Veer Guardian-2026 not only allows these two nations to refine their operational understanding but also serves to strengthen defense cooperation between India and Japan.
