Indian Diaspora Rallies in Support of Athletes at Asian Games 2026
On Sunday, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya participated in a unique event called ‘Sundays on Cycle’ in Nagoya, Japan. This gathering brought together members of the Indian community who came out to cheer for Indian athletes competing in the Asian Games 2026.
In a conversation with ANI, Mandaviya praised the Indian diaspora for organizing the cycling event, highlighting their role in boosting the morale of the athletes. “The Asian Games are happening here in Nagoya with Indian athletes taking part. The Indian community has shown wonderful support by organizing this cycling event to cheer for our players. I am sure our athletes will give their best and make the country proud,” he stated.
The Asian Games officially kicked off with an opening ceremony at Paloma Mizuho Stadium on Saturday. Leading the Indian team were double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker and kabaddi champion Pawan Sehrawat, who had the honor of being the flagbearers.
India has sent a strong team of 501 athletes competing in 36 different sports at this major multi-sport event, which runs from September 19 to October 4. Bhaker, who earned two bronze medals at the Paris 2024 Olympics, and Sehrawat, a member of India’s gold medal-winning kabaddi team from the last Asian Games, showcased India’s sports talent during the ceremonial flag presentation.
Sehrawat stepped in as the male flagbearer after shot-putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor was unable to receive his kit on time. This opening ceremony marked the official start of the games, where athletes from 45 countries will compete across 43 sports for a total of 469 medals.
Overall, the ‘Sundays on Cycle’ event in Nagoya served as a heartwarming display of community support as the competition heats up at the Asian Games.
