Sonal Dinusha Shines as Sri Lanka’s New Cricket Star Against India
Sonal Dinusha has captured the spotlight in Sri Lanka’s recent Test series against India, showcasing his talent after years of dedication and hard work. His cricketing journey began with a significant family sacrifice, as his sister once borrowed money to buy his first cricket bat.
Throughout the two-Test series, Dinusha made an impressive impact, amassing 420 runs at an average of 140. His standout performance came during the second Test in Colombo, where Sri Lanka, following on after a tough first innings, found themselves in a difficult position. Despite being bowled out for 290 and faced with a 213-run deficit, Dinusha played a remarkable innings. He scored an unbeaten 133 runs off 264 balls, helping his team reach 429/9 by the end of their second innings, which ultimately led to a draw.
Dinusha’s coach, Ashan Priyanjan, shared insights into the challenges Dinusha faced early in his cricket career and the crucial support of his family. “His sister played a vital role by borrowing money to buy him his first bat. The family didn’t have much, and today, all their earnings come from Dinusha,” Priyanjan explained. He also emphasized how closely Dinusha is tied to his family and cricket itself.
In preparation for the series, Dinusha heavily focused on honing his skills against India’s spin bowlers. He consulted with Priyanjan about their bowling style and worked specifically on his sweep and reverse sweep shots at the Colombo Cricket Club.
Dinusha’s entry into cricket wasn’t without hurdles. Initially passionate about basketball, he was introduced to cricket by his school coach. Lacking proper equipment, his sister’s gesture of buying him a bat became a pivotal moment in his career.
Priyanjan recalls first noticing Dinusha at the Colombo Cricket Club when he was around 11 or 12 years old. He quickly recognized Dinusha’s dedication to improving his game. “I advised him to master the sweep shot to succeed against spinners, especially since he’ll play a lot in Asian conditions. He took that advice seriously and spent hours practicing,” Priyanjan said.
This hard work paid off as Dinusha used his sweep shot effectively throughout the series, scoring 173 runs with this technique alone, which surpassed the previous record held by Joe Root.
Dinusha’s adaptability was evident during a previous tour of Australia where he faced challenges against short deliveries. Seeking improvement, he arranged extra practice sessions that soon reflected positively in his performance.
What set Dinusha apart in the series against India was not just the number of runs he scored, but how he consistently found ways to overcome pressure from the Indian bowlers. He blended patience with calculated aggression, proving invaluable during tough situations for Sri Lanka.
In summary, here are Dinusha’s achievements from the series:
- 420 runs over four innings with an average of 140
- Three centuries and one half-century
- Key innings of 133 not out in the second innings of the final Test
- Groundbreaking 173 runs through sweep shots against India’s spin
- Recognition as a Player of the Match for his performance
Dinusha’s innings came at a critical moment when Sri Lanka was at risk of losing after following on. With India on the verge of a series victory, he stood firm, refusing to let the opposing team break through. His skillful batting under pressure earned him admirable praise and showed that he is a player to watch for the future.
