Imran Khan’s Sons Stir Controversy with Sky Sports Remarks That Frustrate Pakistan

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently indicated that it might pull its players off the field during a match at Lord’s if an interview featuring the sons of Imran Khan was broadcast by Sky Sports. What could be so alarming in that interview for the PCB to take such a strong stance?

The interview, which lasted 18 minutes and was hosted by former England captain Mike Atherton, took place at Lord’s Pavilion. It featured Sulaiman and Kasim Khan discussing their father, Imran Khan, who has been imprisoned since August 2023. The interview revealed the family’s concerns regarding Imran’s health and wellbeing, an issue that has intensified over time.

Reports suggest that the PCB contacted Sky Sports before the lunch break to express its discontent over the interview. They warned that if it were aired, Pakistan’s players might not return to the field. Sky Sports postponed the airing of the segment and eventually broadcast it during the lunch break, allowing the players to return to the field after the interview concluded.

The PCB’s objections appeared to revolve around the political content of the interview. However, a particularly troubling accusation made by Sulaiman may shed light on the board’s urgency to halt the broadcast. He alleged that authorities were “blatantly trying to kill” Imran in prison, which is a serious claim to level against the Pakistani government.

Sulaiman recounted his father’s struggles, including the isolation he faces for more than 23 hours a day at Adiala Jail, as well as concerns for his eyesight, claiming that Imran has lost about 80 percent vision in one eye but has received inadequate medical treatment. The brothers expressed frustration over not being allowed to visit him, even though they believe they are entitled to regular family visits as per court orders.

Their interview raised pivotal questions about the treatment Imran receives, particularly why he had not been examined by independent doctors despite a court directive to take him to a private hospital. Instead, Sulaiman claimed he was taken to a government facility where the examination was brief and done by government-appointed physicians.

The brothers also lamented their inability to visit their father, as they have not seen him since November 2022. They noted that their visa applications to travel to Pakistan have been either stalled or rejected, fueling suspicions that authorities want to keep them away. Despite the risk of arrest, they emphasized that their main goal is to see their father, even if it does not involve making waves or drawing attention.

Addressing the silence from former Pakistan cricketers, Sulaiman acknowledged that many admire Imran but are often hesitant to speak out due to the oppressive political climate. He hinted that this fear stems from the military influence in the country.

In a poignant moment, Sulaiman voiced that he does not regret his father’s decision to enter politics, stating that Imran’s pursuit to combat corruption and uplift the nation is integral to his identity.

On a lighter note, when asked about their cricket loyalties during the ongoing match at Lord’s, both Sulaiman and Kasim expressed their unwavering support for Pakistan, highlighting their deep-rooted connection to their father’s legacy in cricket.

In summary, while the PCB’s threats did not ultimately result in players leaving the field, the interview managed to shine a light on pressing issues regarding Imran Khan’s health and treatment in prison, stirring conversations well beyond the cricketing realm.
